Walter Xtra-tec XT Milling Tools Feature Pocket Design
Eastec 2023: Walter’s Xtended Technology (XT) milling tools offer large cross-sections for maximum tool stability and a larger contact surface for a secure seat and reduced surface pressure.
Edited by Angela Osborne
Walter’s latest generation in its range of Xtended Technology (XT) milling tools are designed to offer better performance and greater process reliability. The Xtra-tec XT features a new design feature, the pocket position design for the Tiger-tec indexable inserts.
The updated design offers large cross-sections for maximum tool stability and a larger contact surface for a secure seat and reduced surface pressure. The tools also offer improved accessibility of clamping screws for easier handling and shorter indexing time. A high number of teeth increases tool life and productivity. An exact 90-degree angle minimizes additional finishing operations. The inserts also provide a soft cut due to new insert installation position and easy-cutting geometries
The tooling inserts require less effort, but more cost-efficiency. Wear-resistant Tiger-tec grades contribute to the high economic efficiency but also reduced tool inventory costs due to universal applicability, such as face and shoulder milling, ramping, pocket milling and circular interpolation milling, or for machining deep shoulders with its reduced body diameter providing clearance.
They also offer flexible applications due to three available tooth pitches, four different indexable insert sizes, various corner radii (0.2-6 mm) and geometries (with small indexable inserts and high number of teeth, such as for workpieces with a small machining allowance).
The indexable inserts are said to be versatile and highly stable, working with steel, stainless steels, cast iron, nonferrous metals or materials with difficult cutting properties. The rhombic, positive indexable inserts with two cutting edges and a stable cross-section are available with a fully sintered circumference or with a fully ground circumference in four insert sizes with various corner radii.
